The third UK trial of the ROBERT®, a robotic rehabilitation device for early upper and lower limb mobilisation, has concluded at Hobbs Rehabilitation South East in Liss, Hampshire.

ROBERT® is developed by Life Science Robotics and represented in the UK by Summit Medical and Scientific.

The therapy team at Hobbs Rehabilitation used the ROBERT® from October 2025 to April 2026, offering high intensity rehabilitation to outpatients with severe to mild impairments of upper and lower limbs.

Hayley King, Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist at Hobbs Rehabilitation, said:

“We found it interesting to integrate the use of ROBERT® with our clients who have sustained neurological injuries. The ROBERT® allowed the clients to achieve higher repetitions of quality movements within the sessions and they engaged well with digital interface. We found using the EMG triggered SAS when practicing lower limb movements provided real time feedback to the clients as they were trying to move the affected limb. We look forward to the integration of the SAS technology into the upper limb ROBERT® technology in the future.”

Previously the ROBERT® has been successfully trialled at The Children’s Trust and the Inpatient Stroke Services at Trafford General Hospital. The fourth trial at a new site is now underway, with more details to be announced shortly.

Andrew’s testimonial

Andrew acquired a neurological brain injury in 2012 following a road traffic collision. Andrew attended Hobbs Rehabilitation from 2014-18, and has since been attending the clinic once a week for Physiotherapy including the ROBERT®.

Andrew’s initial goals focused on functional gains in his home environment. A major focus since achieving this has been improving his ability to play golf and the quality of his archery. He now reports regularly achieving a bulls-eye!

Andrew’s rehabilitation has been supported through neurotechnology integration, including strength and range of movement exercises using the ROBERT®, which have been pivotal in helping him progress toward his functional and sporting goals.

Peter and Ellie’s testimonial

Peter had a major Stroke in 2021 and has been working with the team at Hobbs Rehabilitation South East since his early rehabilitation days. Peter attends the clinic once a week for Physiotherapy and has been using ROBERT® as part of his weekly therapy.

Peter’s friend and carer, Ellie, has shared this testimonial:

“I have discussed with Peter his use of the ROBERT® and in what way it has affected his sessions.

Confidence in his ability to balance through the support movement of the robotic arm with consistent repeats and sound has helped him achieve more repetitions than he would have done without its use. Also from an observation point this has enabled him to focus on his posture and weight distribution, allowing [therapists] to make the necessary adjustments that you would normally have not been able to do so.

Taking away the personal element of the exercise itself may well have a psychological effect on achieving the goal. A determination to achieve the sound (Ding) is the sound of success!

The sessions have definitely been carried over into Peter’s walking giving him the confidence to continue the movement exercises as much as is possible at home.”
