“Summit Medical and Scientific has equipped us with and installed 6 AMTI force plates that are used for biomechanical testing. Working with Summit is very straight forward and I never have had to wait long for a quote or any advice on how to use or install force plates. All-in-all, the Sports Surgery Clinic has only had positive experiences with Summit and I can only recommend them.”

Force Plates and Multi-Axis Force Measurement

Setting the industry standard

We have been proud to have partnered with AMTI, the global leader in multi-axis force measurement and testing solutions, for over 20 years.

AMTI’s best-in-industry calibration guarantees customers the highest level of accuracy. They are the only force plate manufacturer to meet ASTM’s “Standard Test Method for Verification of Multi-Axis Force Measuring Platforms”, which establishes a global precedence for force plate verification. This guarantees that all AMTI customers are receiving the highest level of precision, reliability and accuracy over the entire working surface of their force plate.

We’re pleased to offer a wide range of force plates in a variety of sizes and capacities, as well as portable options, custom builds for specialist applications, and force platforms for equine and veterinary uses. The force plates can either be used individually, or in a variety of configurations in order to collect multiple footsteps.

Treadmills

Training and evaluating gait and balance

We supply state-of-the-art force-measuring treadmills for the training, evaluation and assessment for gait, balance and stability. Instrumented treadmills allow you to capture multiple footsteps across a longer distance than force plates, and measure gait parameters such as step length, width, frequency and symmetry. You can even introduce perturbations for dynamic testing, or mimic tripping and slipping, in a safe environment.

We can offer single and dual-belt treadmills, with or without safety harnesses, and with or without body weight support.

We also offer a range of gait analysis software to make the most of the data you acquire, and our more complex systems can include motion capture , EMG, and real time virtual reality feedback.

Optimise sports performance, evaluate rehabilitation after injury, or simulate real-world experiences with immersive virtual reality – we will work with you to find the treadmill best suited for your needs.

Our state-of-the-art multi-sensory rehabilitation treadmill systems can be used for clinical analysis, research and immersive physical therapy using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

For example, the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN, pictured right) combines a motion platform with six degrees of freedom, an instrumented force plate dual belt treadmill, motion capture, high speed video, D-Flow software, virtual reality and surround sound, and uses game elements and immersive interactions to engage the subject within a real time feedback loop.

The CAREN is used by some of the UK’s leading facilities including the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) and the Brain and Spinal Injury Centre (BASIC).

Virtual Reality Systems

Customers like Cardiff University and the Brain and Spinal Injury Centre use our virtual reality treadmill systems for innovative PTSD treatment, called Modular Motion-assisted Memory Desensitisation and Reconsolidation (3MDR).

3MDR is based on virtual reality exposure therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, embedded within a novel context whereby the patient walks on a treadmill whilst interacting with a series of self-selected images that are displayed on a large screen and relate to the patient’s past traumas. It aims to reduce cognitive avoidance while concurrently promoting engagement with therapy.

Body weight support

If your patients are unable to walk, stand or move unaided, we have a range of Body Weight Support systems – from vertical unloading for gait, balance and transfer training, to supporting the whole arm from shoulder to hand for upper limb therapy.

This allows rehabilitation to start early in a safe environment, and reduces the number of therapists required and physical strain on the therapist. Patients aren’t restricted by the limitations of conventional therapy, and can practice a wide variety of movements.

These devices are support-as-needed and can be completely tailored to each patient, allowing them to progress and achieve therapy goals.

For research purposes, you can use overground or overhead body weight support, or upper limb weight support, for a wide range of projects and studies.

Plantar Pressure Measurement

Optimise research, athletic performance and patient comfort with plantar pressure measurement. Plantar pressure mapping has become a crucial part of gait assessments and analysis, and helps clinicians and researchers understand the complex interaction between the rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot joints – particularly where there is pain and injury.

Gain insights for human performance or biomechanics research with accurate plantar pressure and gait data and advanced analysis tools, including insoles, walkways and stance pads by XSENSOR.

Our gait and motion research insoles allow sports performance coaches, shoe designers and podiatry clinicians to acquire the most accurate plantar pressure and gait data in any test environment.

EMG and IMU Sensors

Electromyography (EMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors can be used during motion and gait analysis, and for functional diagnoses. EMG can also be used as a control signal for prosthetic devices.

We are pleased to stock state-of-the-art EMG and IMUs by Cometa for gait analysis, including wireless, mini and waterproof systems. These are fully compatible with software provided free of charge to acquire up to 36 channels of EMG or IMU data simultaneously, view and replay inertial data, and export and report all analyses.

Cometa’s technologies ensure high signal quality and integration capabilities, and their systems can be used for heavy duty applications where dirt, sweat and other imperfections could compromise other devices.
