The Summit team are delighted to celebrate a milestone anniversary today: on this day 30 years ago, Summit Medical and Scientific was founded!

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our team members past and present, our sales partners, and our customers and friends for being a part of this journey. We are looking forward to many exciting years ahead.

Commemorating legacies

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our Co-Founder, Andy Brammall, passed away on 6th June 2025. Andy founded the company in 1995 with his wife, Sara, who has been Summit’s Managing Director for over 25 years.

Andy’s 40+ year career was extremely important to him and a strong part of his identity. He very much appreciated all of the many, and often close, friendships and professional relationships he was able to make over these years. He really loved and valued his work and community, whether in the biomechanics or games industries.

Andy’s legacy will continue through all of Summit’s successes, his family, his countless friends and colleagues, and the many Summit customers across the country who he had the pleasure of working with.

On this day we also remember the life of our lovingly self-appointed “Chief Disruptor”, Mike Llewellyn. Mike was a core part of the Summit team for many years, working with Andy and Sara since the company’s foundation and joining the team full-time as Customer Support Engineer until his passing in March 2022. Mike had over 30 years’ experience in the measurement and analysis of human movement, and was Summit’s expert in the use of augmented and virtual reality in gait retraining and rehabilitation. We miss him deeply and remember him fondly.

Remembering our history

Originating in the motion capture industry, Summit’s first partner was Peak Performance Technologies, a Denver-based motion capture specialist who developed industry-leading motion measurement and analysis for sports performance and research.

Not long after followed AMTI, based outside of Boston, who Summit have enjoyed a successful partnership with for almost three decades. AMTI’s pioneering force plate technology has remained at the forefront of multi-axis force measurement for 40 years, and we are proud to have worked alongside them for such a long time.

Over the last ten years, Summit has branched out beyond the field of biomechanics and into clinical rehabilitation and research, starting with Motek, followed by their sister company, Hocoma, in 2018. Both are leading manufacturers in state-of-the-art robotic rehabilitation equipment and VR/AR systems.

On the biomechanics side we have been pleased to represent Myon (now Cometa), AccuPower Solutions, Treadmetrix and XSENSOR for many years. Most recently we are proud to welcome ddrobotec®, Life Science Robotics, CONTEMPLAS and Sprintex to our rehabilitation and movement analysis partners.

Celebrating our achievements

Summit Medical and Scientific

Our outstanding achievements include the installation of the first Motek CAREN High End 360 degrees virtual reality system in Europe at the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) Stanford Hall, near Loughborough. This world-leading biomechanics lab is used in the rehabilitation and therapy of military veterans and active soldiers for a wide range of conditions, including brain and spinal injuries, neurological disorders and amputees.

We are proud to have installed the UK’s first Hocoma total solution for rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic London.

We are always amazed at some of the cool research which is carried out by our customers, the standout being the work by Edinburgh University on the Valkrie humanoid robot for potential missions to Mars, in collaboration with NASA and Physical Mind London working on the next generation of multi-exercise countermeasures for long duration human space exploration. Physical Mind have academic links to St. Mary’s University London and are supported by the UK and European Space Agencies and the European Astronaut Centre. Cometa EMG have also gone into space when St. Mary’s University’s research group took part in a parabolic flight campaign in 2018 to test HIFIm in microgravity for future space exploration.

We are proud to partner with the world’s leading innovators in rehabilitation technology, and work with the UK’s leading healthcare providers and universities. We have installed technology in almost every university and clinical gait lab in the UK over the last three decades – with some force plates installed decades ago still in use!

Here’s to the next 30 years!
