This week we’re looking at the HERO Solution by Motek, and how this meets the 2023 National Clinical Guideline for Stroke. These guidelines are the recommended best practices within stroke care in the UK, providing much-needed updates to recommendations on rehabilitation, psychological and emotional support, and return to work services, amongst many other changes.

In light of these recommendations, we’re reviewing all our clinical solutions and sharing the ways in which these meet the 2023 guidelines. This is to help clinicians assess the rehabilitation technology we offer and how these devices can support patients recovering from a stroke, as well as support the stroke services offering this rehabilitation.

The HERO Solution is a five-system solution for complete functional movement rehabilitation and stroke recovery. Read on to find out more.

About the HERO Solution

The HERO Solution is a five-system solution for complete functional movement rehabilitation. A set of four hardware devices, synchronised by a smart and user-friendly software provides therapists with the treatment options for functional strength, gait and balance, coordination, and motor control.

The HERO Solution consists of:

  • The C-Mill HERO treadmill: A virtual reality force-measuring treadmill with adjustable pitch for uphill walking.
  • MR Functional Squat: For effective muscle loading and single or double leg functional training.
  • MR Cable Column: For functional exercises for upper extremities, lower extremities, as well as the spine. The unique upper body boom makes vertical and downwards movements against the load possible.
  • MR Cube: Create your own set up for feedback exercises. Turn any device into a visual feedback tool.
  • FysioRoadmap: Software offering a systematic clinical approach to monitoring progress, evaluating results, and in-depth reporting.

To help each individual patient, the system makes planning and treatment easy, as patient intake and treatment plan selection will automatically suggest which assessments, tests and questionnaires to take and which interventions to follow on the individual devices.

Meeting the 2023 Stroke Guidelines

So how does the HERO Solution meet the National Clinical Guideline For Stroke?

    • In the first two weeks, therapy should be provided in frequent, short interventions every day. The HERO Solution can help to provide this therapy.
    • Provide three hours of multidisciplinary therapy a day. The HERO Solution is a five-system solution which offers a variety of rehabilitation and exercises to improve motor function.
    • Deliver a range of individualised one-to-one therapies, structured semi-supervised practice, and group work. The HERO Solution can be used by an individual, a group, and supervised or semi-supervised using the engaging and motivating games and software.
    • Participate in balance and coordination work at least twice per week. The HERO Solution helps to train balance and coordination post-stroke.
    • People with weakness should be taught task-specific, repetitive, intensive exercises or activities to increase their strength. The HERO Solution‘s wide range of intensive exercises train task-specific, repetitive movements and activities for daily living to increase strength.
    • People with impaired balance after stroke should be offered repetitive task practice and balance training. The HERO Solution can help with offering repetitive task-oriented exercises and balance training for patients with impaired balance post-stroke.
    • Offer intensive walking training through treadmills or electromechanical gait trainers. The C-Mill HERO is an advanced virtual reality treadmill which can offer intensive gait training.
    • Competition to improve motivation to practise self-directed rehabilitation. The HERO Solution‘s games and exercises support competition and motivation to beat high scores, whether with yourself or other patients, with live feedback to support self-directed rehabilitation.
    • People who are mobile should be assessed for real-world walking. The HERO Solution can support this assessment and encourage patients to participate in gait training within a virtual environment.
