Neural Pathways, one of the UK’s leading rehabilitation providers, are launching their new Neuro Hub this week. This new office includes a larger space in Gateshead to treat clients, and also new equipment including a brand new Motek C-Mill VR treadmill.

Neural Pathways have been using the C-Mill VR with their neurorehabilitation clients since 2019, and launched an amputee rehabilitation service in 2023 in partnership with STEPS Prosthetics. This prosthetic and orthotic service was the first of its kind to offer an interdisciplinary outpatient service in the Northeast. The C-Mill VR treadmill is a powerful tool within this service, helping patients relearn how to walk again with their new lower limb prosthetics.

The generation of outcome measures to monitor and influence progress is a powerful tool in the understanding of rehabilitation progress and helps in the formation of rehabilitation progression within a clinical reasoning landscape. It is an integral part of the Neural Pathways tech offering.

Their brand new C-Mill VR will enhance the rehabilitation technology offerings at the Neuro Hub, and support a wide range of clients requiring therapy for impaired gait, balance and stability.

Kirstie Corfield, Clinical Lead at Neural Pathways, said:

“We have been using the C-Mill VR treadmill since 2019. It has been absolutely fantastic at creating an environment for our clients with which they can interact and relate to their everyday lives. Clients and case managers alike can see their progress, and the data capture allows therapists to produce a report on progress within the outcome measures framework. We are planning to work with Summit Medical and Scientific and a local university to look at research in the future.”

Sara Brammall, Managing Director at Summit Medical and Scientific, said:

“We have enjoyed working with the innovative team at Neural Pathways for several years, and we are delighted to support their clients further with a new C-Mill VR treadmill. Patients challenge themselves in a safe and enriching environment using the C-Mill VR, with real-time data analytics and engaging programmes helping clients stay motivated and informed. We wish the team and their clients all the best with the launch of the Neural Pathways Hub.”

Dr. Frans Steenbrink, Director at Motek, said:

“It is amazing to see that the C-Mill VR finds its way into clinical rehabilitation more and more. Leading rehabilitation providers all over the world, like Neural Pathways in the UK, see the added value of this treadmill-based device, using Augmented Reality projection on the walking surface of the treadmill to facilitate a more effective and efficient functional rehabilitation process. We are proud of the collaboration both with Summit Medical and Scientific and Neural Pathways, and excited to see more patients in the UK have access to this unique technology.

About the C-Mill VR

The C-Mill VR is a single-belt virtual reality treadmill for the evaluation and training of impaired gait and balance, which was developed by Motek and is supplied in the UK by Summit Medical and Scientific.

Using augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), acoustic cues and force plate technology, the C-Mill VR is the ideal solution for effective functional movement therapy.

The C-Mill VR is suitable for paediatric, adult and geriatric patients requiring rehabilitation for any condition affecting gait, balance or stability. This includes fall prevention, stroke, brain injury, spinal injury, lower limb amputees, Parkinson’s Disease, movement disorders, cerebral palsy, and other neurological conditions.

There are four variations of the C-Mill, and the C-Mill VR features an instrumented treadmill, augmented reality projections on the treadmill belt, a virtual reality screen, a safety harness, handrails, and a full suite of gait and balance applications. You can read more about the C-Mill VR here.
