“My whole body feels more normal when using the Lokomat. I feel more active and energized while walking and for 24hrs post walking too. I feel a huge mental boost with focus, motivation, clarity to think and feeling positive about self-moving. I have also noticed an increase in my appetite.”

Hocoma have shared the latest case report on their Knowledge Platform, which focuses on the use of Lokomat training and conventional therapy to train a chronic patient with a complete spinal cord injury. This report was created by NeuroMoves in Perth, Western Australia.

Carlos sustained a complete spinal cord injury in 2011. Carlos was physically active with physiotherapy and treatment since his injury, and underwent an epidural stimulator implant at T12 level in 2018 and received 11 units of stem cell therapy.

When Carlos first started LokomatPro training in 2019:

  • He had moderate cardiovascular capacity
  •  He was easily fatigued
  •  He had poor trunk balance
  •  He was dependent for all activities of daily living
  •  He was wheelchair-bound for most hours of the day
  •  He had low functional capacity
  •  He had low global strength

Carlos trained on the Lokomat four times per week, with each 30-50 minute session having a different focus. This was in combination with conventional therapy, upper limb strength training and functional electrical stimulation.

Over time, Carlos’ trunk strength and confidence improved and the amount of body weight support required was reduced.

When Carlos was re-assessed in March 2022, it was concluded that combining conventional training and robotic gait training using the Lokomat lead to function improvements, as well as physiological benefits.

Thank you Carlos and NeuroMoves in Perth, Western Australia, for sharing this case report.
