ROBERT® testimonial: Achieving more repetitions with robotic rehabilitation
Life Science Robotics
We are delighted to share this testimonial from a patient at Hobbs Rehabilitation South East, who have been trialling the ROBERT® at their rehabilitation centre in Liss, Hampshire since October 2025.
The ROBERT® is a robotic rehabilitation device for early upper and lower limb mobilisation. ROBERT® is developed by Life Science Robotics and represented in the UK by Summit Medical and Scientific.
Previously the ROBERT® has been successfully trialled at The Children’s Trust and the Inpatient Stroke Services at Trafford General Hospital.
Peter and Ellie’s testimonial
Peter had a major Stroke in 2021 and has been working with the team at Hobbs Rehabilitation South East since his early rehabilitation days. Peter attends the clinic once a week for Physiotherapy and has been using ROBERT® as part of his weekly therapy.
Peter’s friend and carer, Ellie, has shared this testimonial:
“I have discussed with Peter his use of the ROBERT® and in what way it has affected his sessions.
Confidence in his ability to balance through the support movement of the robotic arm with consistent repeats and sound has helped him achieve more repetitions than he would have done without its use. Also from an observation point this has enabled him to focus on his posture and weight distribution, allowing [therapists] to make the necessary adjustments that you would normally have not been able to do so.
Taking away the personal element of the exercise itself may well have a psychological effect on achieving the goal. A determination to achieve the sound (Ding) is the sound of success!
The sessions have definitely been carried over into Peter’s walking giving him the confidence to continue the movement exercises as much as is possible at home.”
Thank you very much to Peter and Ellie for sharing your feedback on the ROBERT®.
Please get in touch with the Summit Medical & Scientific team today if you would like to arrange a demonstration.
About ROBERT®
ROBERT® is a robotic rehabilitation device, offering a complete and flexible solution for upper and lower limb therapy.
ROBERT® provides intensive rehabilitation for acute patients as early as possible, and can be used for upper or lower limb therapy either in-bed or seated with just one device.
Even severely impaired patients can be mobilised using ROBERT®, supporting a patient’s rehabilitation as soon as possible after their admission to hospital. Getting patients moving early and intensively is an important step towards optimal recovery and facilitating neuroplasticity.
How ROBERT® works
Therapists first define the desired movement using ROBERT®, including Activities of Daily Living and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation with seven degrees of freedom.
The ROBERT® then repeats the intensive therapy, offering tailored levels of resistance and support based on the patient’s ability.
EMG-triggered Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) within the additional Sensing and Stimulating (SAS) module provides intelligent sensing to support patients in contracting weakened muscles, allowing them to perform exercises with the ROBERT®.
Passive mobilisation is for completely immobilised patients, where ROBERT® carries out the exercise on the behalf of patients with reduced or no function. Active assistive mobilisation guides the patient through the exercise, and the patient’s function and strength determine the level of activity. Finally, active resistive mobilisation offers resistance against the patient’s movement.
ROBERT®’s assistive technology reduces the need for heavy and repetitive lifts, freeing resources for other aspects of clinical treatment and reducing the strain on the therapist. Clinicians can transport the device throughout their facility to each patient, and simply plug, attach, record and play using the intuitive interface. Patients can be set up and ready to go in as little as three minutes.
