As a continuing contribution towards a successful partnership and to enhance patient care, Summit Medical and Scientific have provided Hobbs Rehabilitation with two AMTI AccuSway portable force plate systems for assessing balance and postural sway. This high-end technology will be used within their vestibular and concussion services at Hobbs Rehabilitation South East in Liss, and Hobbs Rehabilitation Winchester.

Our AMTI force plates are sensor-based instruments that measure the ground reaction forces generated by a body standing on or moving across them (such as walking, running or jumping), to quantify balance, gait and other parameters of biomechanics.

AMTI is the world-leading manufacturer of biomechanics force plates and has been represented by Summit Medical and Scientific for 30 years. Their best-in-industry calibration guarantees customers the highest level of accuracy.

Lizzie Mills, Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist at Hobbs Rehabilitation, said:

“We are looking forward to utilising the force plate within our outpatient clinics at Hobbs South East and Hobbs Winchester over the coming months. We anticipate that it is going to provide us with additional information about our client’s balance and enable us to provide real-time biofeedback in treatment sessions. The potential application to both our Concussion and Vestibular client group as well as our clients with neurological conditions makes the equipment versatile and a useful addition to our clinics.”

Sara Brammall, Managing Director at Summit Medical and Scientific said:

We are really happy to supply these force plates to Hobbs Rehabilitation as part of our continuing partnership. Patients can benefit from the precise outcome measurements and assessments provided by high-level technology like AMTI AccuSway force plates. We look forward to seeing how clients are assessed using this equipment in the vestibular and concussion services, and the impact this has on their clinical evaluations.

About AMTI AccuSway portable force plates

The portable AccuSway by AMTI is perfect for on-the-go balance assessments and training in your clinical practice or research lab. This multi-axis force plate is a highly accurate portable solution specifically designed for quantifying human balance and postural sway.

The AccuSway uses a Hall Effect-based sensor design. This sensor element provides extremely high overload protection on all axes making it very suitable for portable applications.

The AccuSway measures the three forces (Fx, Fy, Fz) and the three moments (Mx, My, Mz) involved in balance, providing outputs that allow easy computation of the centre-of-pressure coordinates and up to 31 other parameters.

A grid on the surface of the force plate provides base-of-support coordinates which can be combined with the balance data, allowing the centre-of-pressure to be plotted relative to the subject’s foot position.

The AccuSway:

  • Provides a large support surface
  • Can be used with a desktop or laptop computer
  • Contains complete built-in electronics
  • Has an external input that can be used to synchronise data
  • Is lightweight
  • Is low profile

The AccuSway will be used with AMTI’s Balance Clinic software.
